After flying out of Hong Kong, I applied for an air passenger departure tax refund. The amount was HK$200. This is a refund for eligible exempt passengers, rather than a rebate available to everyone departing Hong Kong.
Check eligibility first
Eligible transfer passengers generally must arrive and depart by air on the same or following calendar day. Some passengers arriving by land or sea and departing by air on the same or following day also qualify, subject to the detailed restrictions in the official rules. Check the official refund website before applying.
The HK$200 rate applies to tickets bought on or after October 1, 2025; older tickets may have a different tax amount. Submit your application within 28 calendar days of departure. The platform allows submission after departure immigration clearance.
Prepare your documents and apply
- Open app.apdtrefund.hk.
- Upload the identification and arrival evidence requested for your eligibility category. For an air transfer, prepare both flight itineraries or tickets. For a land or sea arrival, prepare the relevant travel document and arrival evidence.
- Upload your Hong Kong departure boarding pass and an itinerary or receipt showing the departure tax charged.
- Choose an available refund method and review any transaction fees before submitting.
The system offers supported card refunds, electronic wallets, and cash collection at designated airport outlets. I chose Alipay and received RMB 161.68 after around 10–15 minutes. That was my own experience; processing time and the amount after currency conversion can vary.
