On Sunday, December 14, 2025 (Hong Kong Time), at the Democratic Party headquarters located in the Henley Commercial Building in Prince Edward, the Democratic Party held a special general meeting to vote on the motion for "Dissolution and Liquidation."
A total of 121 members cast their votes. The results were: 117 votes in favor of liquidation, 0 votes against, and 4 abstentions. With an approval rating of approximately 97%, the dissolution of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong was officially declared.
Since the handover of Hong Kong, the Democratic Party has been actively engaged in the city's democratic movement and once enjoyed a period of glory. However, following the implementation of the "Patriots Governing Hong Kong" policy in 2021, the party rapidly lost influence. Many members were arrested for violating the Hong Kong National Security Law or for sedition crimes. Subsequently, the pro-establishment camp swept all seats in the Hong Kong Legislative Council. After the 2021 electoral system reform, the Democratic Party failed to secure a single seat again.
By 2025, financial exhaustion and declining influence made the party unsustainable. It became increasingly difficult to raise funds from the public to maintain internal operations. Meetings to discuss the possibility of dissolution were held as early as February of this year, followed by another round in April. Democratic Party Chairman Lo Kin-hei stated that dissolving the party was an incredibly difficult choice, made after balancing numerous factors.
In recent years, an increasing number of Hong Kong democratic political parties have disbanded. Whether due to the inability to win seats for various reasons or the ineffectiveness of civil organizations, this event marks the definitive exit of traditional pan-democratic parties from the historical stage.
