Google announced on August 11 that the Gemini app surpassed one billion monthly users, becoming the fastest-growing product in the company's history.
Its usage figures show how people interact with the service: 63% of users talk directly to Gemini, one in five Gemini Live interactions includes a camera feed or screen sharing, and 38% of school-related requests include an attachment. Google also reported 150 million images generated daily.

My impression is that distribution plays a major role. Gemini appears throughout Google's ecosystem, including document workflows and Chrome, making it easy for people to encounter the assistant without actively searching for a separate AI product. Google can also promote it at a scale smaller competitors cannot match.
That does not make model quality irrelevant, but it helps explain why the user count alone cannot tell us which model is best at a particular task. Read Google's announcement.
