Halloween at an American School: Costumes and Candy

Halloween felt much more visible at my American school than it had in my experience in China. Classrooms were decorated, teachers wore costumes, and candy became part of the day’s atmosphere.

The photo above is one of the classroom entrances I photographed. Witches, ghosts, zombies, and other characters gave students and teachers an excuse to be playful. Some classes added special activities, and the familiar “trick or treat” theme turned an ordinary school day into something I remember.

Halloween traditions have changed over centuries; today’s costumes, pumpkins, and candy do not come from one simple story about scaring away ghosts. What interested me here was the contemporary experience: a shared celebration that made room for everyone’s choice of character.

Games also make the holiday visible across borders. Seasonal events and spooky decorations can create that feeling even where Halloween is less common offline. Check the announcements for games you already play, since events and their availability change each year.
