Macau Supermarket Snacks: A Personal Shopping Guide

On visits to Macau from Guangdong, I liked browsing supermarkets for imported snacks and drinks. This is a personal food-shopping guide adapted for visitors, rather than advice about avoiding customs duties.

What I looked for

Lai Lai was one supermarket chain I found convenient. Stock and prices vary by branch, so compare the actual shelf label and package size.

Ferrero Rocher was one example where the prices I saw in Macau looked attractive compared with nearby mainland shops. The original post quoted MOP 90–120 for a 24-piece box. That comparison used the exchange rate and prices at the time; it is not a current universal discount.

I also liked EDO biscuits and looked for brands such as Meiji chocolate, Tao Kae Noi seaweed, Four Seas seaweed, and Vitasoy drinks. Compare flavor, pack size, expiry date, and the amount you can realistically carry. A larger multipack is not necessarily a better deal if it goes unused.

Bringing purchases home

Customs allowances depend on the destination, travel history, product, quantity, and current rules. Do not use an old “one bottle” or “one carton” claim as a universal limit. This guide does not recommend purchasing tobacco or medicine; check the relevant official customs requirements if those are part of your trip.

Removing electronics packaging does not automatically remove a duty obligation, and medicine ingredients can have separate restrictions. For an ordinary snack trip, buying moderate quantities for personal use and keeping receipts makes more sense than assuming every item in Macau is tax-free.

Between shopping stops, I would leave time to enjoy the city itself. The Ruins of St. Paul’s were one of my familiar sightseeing stops, and the snacks were only part of the visit.
