CS2 Trade Protection and a July 2025 Skin-Market Reaction

After Valve introduced CS2 trade protection in July 2025, my original post recorded a decline in the market index shown below. It moved from roughly 1,500 to 1,300 in that particular chart; that is not a verified percentage loss for every cosmetic.

The new feature allowed eligible protected trades from the preceding seven days to be reversed. It was intended to help with stolen accounts and scams, and it also changed the timing assumptions used by external marketplaces. Valve’s Trade Protected Items FAQ explains the restrictions.

The account initiating a reversal faces a 30-day trade and Community Market cooldown. Reversal concerns all relevant protected trades in the period, rather than being an ordinary return policy for selecting a single unfavorable purchase. Received protected items also have use and transfer restrictions during protection.

External services adjusted settlement processes around the new rules, but their policies are separate from Steam’s. The original post speculated that sellers would reverse rising-price items; a price chart cannot tell us how often that happened or establish it as the sole cause of a decline.

For someone choosing a cosmetic to use, the useful questions are the actual price, restrictions, and delivery terms. A market reaction may make some items cheaper, but it does not guarantee a bargain or a future recovery.
