Everything You Need to Know About the Retake Mode in CS2

Just recently, Valve brought back the Retake mode, and for a lot of new CS2 players this mode feels pretty unfamiliar. Even many older players who haven’t touched it in a while might not fully remember how it works. So this post will walk you through what Retake is, how to play it, and what’s different about it in CS2.

Retake

What is Retake mode?

Like the name suggests, Retake is all about the CT side retaking a bombsite that’s already been planted on.

  • The round starts with T-side having already planted the bomb.
  • Each round is super short — about 40 seconds total.
  • CTs spawn at a random spot close to the site and have to push in, clear the Ts, and defuse.
  • The goal for CT is: eliminate all 3 Ts and/or defuse the bomb before it explodes.
  • Bombs are usually planted in one or two fixed spots on each Retake map, so once you’ve played a few rounds you’ll start recognizing the default plants.

Because the bomb is already down, Retake skips the eco/buy/setup phase — it goes straight to the best part: fighting for the site.

Team sizes & win condition

Retake is a bit CT-favored in setup difficulty, so the game balances that like this:

  • CT: 4 players
  • T: 3 players
  • First to 8 rounds wins (just like casual)
  • You can play with bots, and you can leave at any time like in casual

It’s designed to be fast, low-commitment, and good for warmup.

Weapons in Retake

Each round the game gives you a few random weapon choices — SMGs, rifles, sometimes the AWP — and you pick one for that round.

You don’t have to worry about economy at all. No saving, no pistols-only, no “my teammate didn’t drop.” It’s all pre-set.

This also makes it a decent place to force yourself to use guns you don’t normally pick — like the M4A4 or a certain rifle you’ve been avoiding.

So what did Valve change?

One thing players noticed: Retake XP got nerfed.

Right now, Retake gives XP more like casual — you get XP based on the points you earn (kills, objective, etc.) — but Valve lowered the value.
Now 1 score point = 2 XP, which is really low.

So even if you play 4–5 Retake matches, the XP you get is still worse than playing a single full casual match. If you’re grinding weekly drops, Retake is not the most efficient way to level.

Why doesn’t everyone like Retake?

A few reasons:

  1. XP is too low – people want to level and get their weekly drop.
  2. Utility is rarely meaningful – rounds are so short and Ts are already on site, so you don’t get to run full executes or coordinated retakes with utility like in 5v5.
  3. Some maps feel unbalanced – if all 3 Ts are tucked into site together, CTs have to run in with almost no time, and Ts can literally just stall the clock.
  4. You don’t really have time to do “proper CS stuff” – like full comms, careful clearing, slow retakes — if you do all that, the bomb just explodes.

So a lot of players treat Retake as a mini-warmup mode rather than a main mode.

But it’s still good for new players

If you’re new to CS2, Retake can still help you:

  • There’s no economy pressure
  • Rounds are short and forgiving
  • You get to practice site entries and trades
  • You get exposed to common plant spots
  • You get forced variety in weapons (good for learning)

Just don’t go in expecting it to be the fastest way to grind XP.

What could make Retake better?

Honestly, if Valve:

  • restored the XP to a more normal value,
  • let Retake read from your inventory to randomize from your guns,
  • and polished some map balance where CT literally can’t retake in time,

…then Retake would probably be a lot more popular. Right now it’s fun, but kind of “snack size” CS.

Final thoughts

Retake is a fast-paced, low-pressure, fight-focused CS2 mode.
If you like pure gunfights more than doing smokes and defaults, this mode is actually perfect for you.

But if you’re grinding weekly bonuses, or you really care about XP efficiency — casual / premier / deathmatch will still be better.

What about you — do you like the short, burst-style Retake rounds, or do you still prefer full-length casual/competitive games?
