New York is an expensive city, so I was curious about what its public school teachers earn. For the 2026–27 school year, the salary figures are quite striking.
According to TeachNYC, starting salaries effective September 14, 2026, with no prior teaching experience, are:
| Qualification | Annual base salary, USD |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | $71,314 |
| Master's degree | $80,166 |
These are gross annual salaries before deductions. Pay rises through experience-based steps and educational differentials. This NYC Public Schools schedule also covers high school teachers.

Understanding the top salary
The chart's gray C1 line starts at $71,314 and reaches $132,532; the blue C2+PD master's line runs from $80,166 to $141,384.
The $150,236 ceiling is in the highest MA+30 / C6+PD column at the 22-year longevity step, as shown in the UFT salary schedule. Reaching it requires the applicable educational differential as well as seniority.
Raises, bonuses and extra work
The 2022–27 contract's five general raises compound to about 16.8%. Retention bonuses add to compensation separately. The UFT's contract summary gives a broader range of 17.58%–20.42% including annual bonuses across covered employee groups; an individual teacher's result depends on salary and eligibility.
There are extra earning opportunities too. One correction to the original estimate of roughly $60 for covering a class: the coverage rate effective September 14, 2026 is $52.98. Under the coverage rules, the first coverage each term is unpaid; additional qualifying coverages are paid.
The salary progression and long school summer break certainly make the job look appealing to me, qwq. That is my personal impression of the package.
