After moving to New York, trying Chinese restaurants became one way I found familiar flavors in a new city. By the time of this September 2025 post, I had explored more than a dozen places and started collecting recommendations.

Our author-curated restaurant map is a starting point, rather than a current guarantee that every entry is open. Check a restaurant’s own listing for its address, hours, menu, and reservation requirements before visiting.
Manhattan Chinatown, Flushing in Queens, and the Eighth Avenue area of Brooklyn are useful neighborhoods to explore. They offer very different trips depending on where you live and what kind of food you want. The original post mentioned familiar chains as well, but specific branches and prices can change.
In my experience at the time, some Manhattan meals cost more than comparable options elsewhere. That is a personal impression, not a rule for every restaurant or a reason to assume one neighborhood is always cheaper.
I also like the idea of trying unfamiliar local food between visits for flavors from home. My student budget sometimes reduced that ambition to a fast-food meal, but exploring gradually was part of settling into the city.
