Gemini Usage: What is the difference between the new Free and Pro plans?

Just a couple of days ago, Google updated the visual design of Gemini on both the web and the app, rolling out a completely redesigned, "very large" UI. So, what new features did Google quietly sneak in? The most important one is that you can now view your real-time usage limits and remaining quota directly on the web and the app.

According to Google's official documentation, there is a quota that refreshes every 5 hours, as well as another limit that refreshes weekly. Hitting either of these will prevent you from continuing the conversation.

Usage Limit

I ran some tests using both a Free plan and a Pro plan. Since Google updated Gemini, you can now toggle a complex "thinking mode" (under normal circumstances, it runs in standard mode). Under this complex mode, asking the Free version of Gemini 3.1 Pro about 5 relatively open-ended, medium-difficulty questions that require explanation will completely exhaust the 5-hour window limit.

As for the Pro plan, it's generally still more than enough for standard use. I asked over twenty questions and hit about 70% of the limit. The Google documentation states that usage is calculated differently based on the complexity of the questions and the tools utilized.
However, for the Pro version's "deep research" feature, you'll hit the 5-hour limit in just about 3 to 6 uses, depending on the difficulty of the prompts.

Personal Thoughts
Because I was a heavy Gemini user a month or two ago and always used the highest-tier Pro model, I remember being able to have nearly 100 rounds of conversation without hitting any limits. Now, it feels like the Free plan's restrictions have been tightened significantly (maybe doubled?), and the Pro plan's limits have definitely been scaled back.

Fortunately, since the Pro plan can use other tools and their usage is calculated separately, it's still somewhat manageable. But heavy users definitely feel that the Pro plan isn't quite enough anymore—guess Google is starting to learn from Claude's playbook, huh?
