The United States stops political asylum

As of today (November 29), the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has officially announced a suspension on processing all political asylum–related immigration applications. This means that individuals currently waiting in the asylum queue will not be approved, denied, or have their cases closed for the time being.

The suspension appears to be triggered by the recent incident involving an Afghan national—who had been granted political asylum—opening fire on members of the National Guard. This event raised serious concerns about whether the current asylum vetting process adequately protects U.S. homeland security. USCIS now intends to re-evaluate the potential security risks posed by individuals seeking entry through political asylum.

USCIS Post

Over the past several years, a significant number of applicants from mainland China have used political asylum as a route to enter the United States. While some genuinely qualify for protection, many others managed to obtain asylum through fabricated claims. Due to challenges in conducting thorough background checks and the difficulty in verifying applicants’ personal histories, the U.S. has inadvertently admitted asylum seekers from around the world without fully understanding their risks. As domestic public safety concerns continue to rise, the Afghan shooting incident has become the catalyst that ultimately pushed USCIS to halt asylum case processing.
