Just a few days ago, X rolled out a new update: by clicking the “Joined” date on someone’s profile, you can now see more detailed account information. This feature marks the first time a major social media platform outside of mainland China has introduced visible IP location data.

The page now displays the user’s IP region. If someone is accessing X through a proxy, X will show a notice saying: “This user is currently connected through a proxy, IP location may be inaccurate.” It also lists where the user originally downloaded or accessed the X app — for example, mine shows the Turkish App Store.
This update unexpectedly exposed many early internet veterans — people who registered Twitter accounts between 2006–2010, long before access restrictions — as well as users who can still connect to X directly from within China.
Who knows, maybe in the future X will even start displaying IP locations on every post. Let’s wait and see!
