Discord just dropped a bombshell announcement a few moments ago. Starting next month, the "Wild West" days are over. If you want to join an Age-Restricted Server (NSFW), you will need to prove you are an adult. And no, just clicking "I am 18+" isn't enough anymore. You will need to upload a Government ID and pass a Facial Recognition scan.
The AI is Watching: Discord is also deploying AI to analyze account behavior to sniff out minors trying to bypass the system. This is a direct response to tightening global regulations on child safety (similar to the UK's Online Safety Act).
The Privacy Nightmare: While protecting kids is good, this raises massive privacy red flags.
- The Risk: Handing over your ID and biometric data (your face) to a chat app feels risky. Even though Discord promises to delete the data immediately after verification, history shows that "deleted" doesn't always mean "gone forever" in the event of a hack.
- Third-Party Trust: Most of these verifications are handled by third-party services. If they get breached, your ID is out there.
The Verdict: Is this the end of anonymity on Discord? For NSFW communities, absolutely. Users now have to decide: Is that server really worth dosing yourself for?
