Valve’s March 18, 2026 update changed how reloading works in CS2. Instead of returning unused rounds to the reserve, a reload discards the remaining ammunition in the current magazine and takes a fresh one.

For someone like me who tends to reload after every kill, that is a painful adjustment. Weapons with fewer reserve magazines make habitual reloading particularly expensive. I felt it could make the AWP less forgiving in a long round.
Valve says most weapons receive three reserve magazines, with different allocations for particular weapons. Check the weapon’s ammo display rather than assuming every gun has the same total.
This makes efficiency more important: a safe moment to reload is no longer automatically a reason to do it. See Valve’s announcement for the design explanation.
