Counter-Strike 2 is a team-based first-person shooter released in 2023. This guide covers the account features that confuse new players, then the practical habits that matter more than buying cosmetics.
Understand the round
In the main bomb-defusal mode, Terrorists try to plant the bomb and defend it until it explodes. Counter-Terrorists try to prevent the plant or defuse the bomb. Eliminating the other team can also decide a round, but the bomb state matters: killing the last attacker does not remove an already planted bomb. Other modes include Deathmatch, Arms Race, and hostage rescue, while community servers offer additional experiences.
Prime Status and weekly care packages
CS2 is free to start. Prime Status adds access to XP, competitive ranks and ratings, Premier, and eligibility for weekly care packages. Valve lists these benefits in its Prime Status FAQ. Check the price shown in your own Steam region rather than converting the Chinese price in the original screenshot.

Weekly packages offer a choice from the displayed rewards; they are not a promise that every item shown is awarded. Available items and systems can change. Their resale value varies, so buying Prime does not guarantee that future drops will repay its cost.
Cases and skins
A case contains a pool of possible cosmetics and generally requires a purchased key to open. The result is randomized, and rare knives or gloves are uncommon. The original guide quoted an unsupported gold-item probability, so this version does not repeat it. If you want a particular cosmetic, compare its direct purchase price with the uncertain cost of opening cases.
Selling on the Steam Market adds fees, and Steam Wallet proceeds are different from withdrawing cash. Examine the net-proceeds preview. Third-party marketplaces have their own terms and risks; none is required to learn or enjoy the game.
XP and service medals
Profile levels are separate from competitive skill ratings. Earning XP raises the profile level, and reaching level 40 lets eligible players claim the year’s service medal. Reaching the requirement again during the same medal year can upgrade its color. Weekly XP bonuses and reductions affect how quickly progress accumulates; read the current in-game display instead of treating an old table as a permanent rule.

Other visible items include Premier season medals, Major event coins, veteran coins, and older event rewards. Their requirements vary by season or event. Buying a Major viewer pass is optional and does not guarantee profitable souvenir rewards.

Official and third-party matchmaking
Official matchmaking is enough to begin. Services such as FACEIT add their own rankings, tournaments, and anti-cheat requirements; Chinese platforms mentioned in the original include Perfect World, 5E, and B5. Compare regional servers, queues, account requirements, and the software a service asks you to install. A different anti-cheat system does not guarantee a cheat-free match.
Habits worth learning early
- Use Deathmatch and Casual to learn movement, weapons, and maps before relying on a competitive rating.
- Keep your crosshair near likely head height instead of looking at the floor. Learn to stop before firing accurate rifle shots.
- Choose a comfortable mouse sensitivity and crosshair, then give yourself time to adapt. Constant changes make practice harder to judge.
- Learn a few useful smokes, flashes, and basic site callouts. Give teammates short, concrete information about location and timing.
- Use walking when quiet movement matters, and listen for footsteps. A decent headset helps more than an expensive skin.
- Avoid making crouching your automatic response to every fight. Positioning, timing, and team trades often matter more.
Counter-Strike rewards repeated practice and clear communication. You do not need every medal or an elaborate inventory to be useful to your team; learning one map well is a better first target.
