On March 26, according to a report by the Financial Times, OpenAI has indefinitely shelved its plans for an 18+ adult mode. Prior to this, OpenAI had briefly "privately" opened an "age verification page," leading many to believe that an adult mode for ChatGPT wasn't too far off. However, investors and internal OpenAI employees subsequently argued that releasing an adult mode violates social ethics and could cause certain societal harms.

Previously, OpenAI officials had continually posted about their intentions to launch an adult model, but it kept getting delayed and pushed back. Currently, OpenAI has confirmed that this erotic model has been shelved with no timeline for release. The AI company, valued at $730 billion, stated that before making any product decisions, they want to conduct long-term research on erotic chats and the impact of emotional attachment, admitting that there is currently no "empirical evidence."
OpenAI also stated that AI should not replace your friends or family, and that emotional connections should only exist between humans. Launching such a model contradicts the original mission established when OpenAI first launched ChatGPT: that AI should benefit all of humanity.
