Is YouTube Premium Worth It for a Heavy Viewer?

I use YouTube heavily for lessons, reviews, and explanations of unfamiliar subjects. The account screenshot in my original post showed about 270 hours of viewing after I subscribed in May 2025. For that level of use, the convenience was noticeable.

The benefits I used

Premium removes platform-served ads from eligible videos and includes background playback and offline downloads where supported. It also includes YouTube Music Premium. Creator-read sponsorships inside a video are still part of the video, so “ad-free” does not mean every promotional segment disappears. YouTube’s benefits guide explains the feature and device limits.

Background playback was useful for listening with the screen off. Downloads helped when connectivity was unreliable. Enhanced 1080p bitrate can improve eligible videos, but availability depends on the content and device; it is not a separate guarantee for every video.

Whether the price makes sense

The original post quoted a historical U.S. family-plan price. Check your current regional offer rather than relying on that number. Student plans require eligibility verification, and a family plan covers the manager and up to five other eligible household members living at the same residential address; it is not simply a discount pool for unrelated friends.

My decision comes down to use. If YouTube and music are part of most days, removing repeated interruptions can be valuable. If you only watch a few short videos each week, the subscription may solve a problem you barely have. Try comparing the cost with your actual habits instead of subscribing just because the feature list is long.
