Telegram combines messaging, large communities, broadcasting, and bots. That flexibility can feel confusing at first. This guide explains the main features and the settings I would check before joining a lot of public groups.
Cloud chats and Secret Chats
An ordinary one-to-one Telegram conversation is a cloud chat. It syncs between your devices, but it does not use end-to-end encryption. Secret Chats are a separate, explicitly enabled feature: they use end-to-end encryption and stay on the devices where the conversation began. Logging out loses the Secret Chats on that device. See the official Telegram FAQ for the distinction.

Secret Chats support self-destruct timers. Telegram also attempts screenshot detection, but a notification cannot guarantee that someone did not save the content or photograph the screen with another device. Encryption also does not protect a conversation if one of its endpoints is compromised.
Groups, channels, and files
Groups are conversations among members; Telegram supports groups with up to 200,000 members. Channels broadcast posts to subscribers and can have unlimited audiences. Standard accounts can upload files up to 2 GB each, while Premium increases that limit to 4 GB. Cloud chat history normally follows you to another signed-in device; Secret Chats do not.
Bots can provide search, music tools, message forwarding, and AI features. They are operated by different developers, so examine what you send them. My separate Telegram search-bot article (Chinese) has examples. A bot should never need the login code that Telegram sends you.
Settings to check
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security and review phone-number visibility, who can find you by number, last-seen information, and group invitations.
- Enable two-step verification and inspect active sessions. Remove devices you do not recognize.
- Review automatic account deletion after inactivity. The available choices and default can change; choose deliberately rather than assuming an old 12-month limit.
- Report and block spam accounts. Paid messaging controls may help, but a subscription does not replace judgment.
If you need a Chinese interface, the original Chinese language-pack guide explains the community translations. The official web client is web.telegram.org. Sensitive-content settings are available only where the account, region, and client support them; they do not override local rules.
Recognize behavior rather than a phone-number country
An unsolicited greeting alone is not proof of fraud. The stronger signs are pressure to move money, guaranteed investment returns, an emergency that cannot be independently checked, links requesting a login code, and demands for cryptocurrency or gift cards. A country code is not reliable evidence of someone’s identity or intentions.
Check a claimed friend or business through a contact method you already trust. Keep login codes private and avoid sending funds simply because a profile looks established. Private groups and channels are not exempt from Telegram moderation or applicable law; privacy settings should help you control your exposure, not imply that everything inside a group is safe.
