As of the time this post was published, the Hong Fuk Court fire has caused at least 75 deaths and 77 injuries. Firefighting operations have been largely completed. Fundraising efforts are underway to support individuals who have lost their homes. The Hong Kong community has shown unprecedented unity, with large numbers of volunteers arriving at the scene and donating significant amounts of supplies. Many nearby residents even offered their homes as temporary shelter for those displaced by the fire.
The Hong Kong government has allocated HKD 300 million and will distribute HKD 10,000 to each affected resident.
This fire is one of the largest in Hong Kong’s history. The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has established a special investigation task force to look into whether the construction contractor engaged in corruption or used substandard materials.
