OpenAI has opened applications for ChatGPT for Academic Researchers. The program offers qualifying scientists, mathematicians, and engineers early access to frontier models, with a planned expansion to 100,000 researchers through 2027.
The initial program is limited to qualifying researchers at selected degree-granting institutions with substantial research activity. Participants can collaborate with up to four colleagues at their institution. Admission is reviewed; it is not automatic for anyone with a university email address.

It is interesting to see AI become a more direct part of scientific work. Stronger reasoning and safeguards may help, but researchers still need to check evidence, calculations, and conclusions themselves.
