DV, OV, and EV TLS Certificates: What Actually Differs

HTTPS uses TLS to authenticate a server and encrypt the connection. Certificates are often called “SSL certificates,” though modern deployments use TLS. The main distinction between DV, OV, and EV is what identity information the certificate authority verifies, not a progressively stronger encryption algorithm.

TLS certificate validation categories

Domain validation: DV

DV confirms control of the requested domain through an approved validation method. It does not independently establish that the website’s business is legitimate. Automation makes DV convenient for blogs, applications, and many other sites.

Free services such as Let’s Encrypt can provide trusted DV certificates. A free certificate can support strong TLS just as a paid certificate can. Lifetimes and renewal policies vary; automate renewal rather than assuming every free certificate lasts exactly 90 days.

Organization validation: OV

OV adds verified organization information. That may help identify the entity named in a certificate, but does not guarantee honest transactions or eliminate phishing. Issuance time and price depend on the authority and the verification needed.

Extended validation: EV

EV follows more detailed identity-verification requirements. It does not use inherently stronger encryption than DV or OV. Modern browser interfaces also generally do not reproduce the old prominent green organization bar.

The CA/Browser Forum EV guidelines describe the required checks. Whether a warranty is included depends on the issuer’s contract, and it is not general insurance against every website problem.

Individual identity and choosing a certificate

The original article also discussed individual validation, sometimes labeled IV. Individual identity information is a separate consideration; it should not be treated as a universal fourth tier of encryption strength.

Choose based on your identity-verification needs, automation, compatibility, and support. For a small site, automated DV is often sufficient. An organization may need OV or EV for policy or identity reasons. In every case, use a supported TLS configuration and keep the server secure.
